Such a late, late spring this year. Here on April 15th we had more snow and mid 20's on the temps. So not normal.
I'm
hearing reports from all over the US, even in Georgia, how much colder
for a longer period of time it is this spring. Bee producers in the
south are delayed and cutting back early the numbers promised and
delaying shipments.
I
have delayed raising the queens and setting up the mating nucs just
because of this weather. All experienced and long time beekeepers, have
in the past, got in a hurry making splits or making up queens and
mating nucs and then lost it all because of the cold and the smaller
clusters not able to keep things warm. I have learned a long time
ago, it is better to wait and work with what the conditions for the year
are.
What challenges this spring has brought.
We all get impatient and get spring
fever and want to get going as soon as possible. The more years you are
a beekeeper, the stronger the spring fever will get a grip.
Just don't fight Mother Nature,
just work with her.
